When Mstislav Keldish finished school, he was only 16. He wanted to become a building-engineer like his father, but he could enter an engineering institute only at 17, so he decided to enter the Moscow University to study mathematics and physics and then to become an engineer. After graduating from the University at the age of 20 he was sent to work to the Central Airo-Hydrodynarnical Institute - the centre of aviation science at the time. Here he could make use of his knowledge of mathematics. The young scientist worked with enthusiasm and soon issued a number of important scientific works. M. Keldish became a Doctor of Sciences when he was 27. He got two State rewards and soon was awarded a title of Hero of Socialist Labour.
His contribution to the mathematical science of calculation is of great importance. As a professor of the Moscow University he gave much of his attention and abilities to teaching the young generation and was carrying out a great scientific work at the same time.
M. Keldish became an academician at the age of 35 and on the 19th of May 1961 he was elected President of the Academy of Sciences of the U.S.S.R. Now he is a member of the Central Committee of our Party and the Deputy of the Supreme Soviet.
